Thank God, they weren't too badly. Raylan had been expecting the worst. It was always better to expect the worst. The incident would carry it's own scars, but at least they were the kind, Raylan hoped, that wouldn't leave deep marks. Hah, wishful thinking.

He glanced back at Jonathan and the boy who clung to the puppy. It was just a moment and just enough inattention.

Shit.

Raylan drew his gun without thinking and leveled it at the youth charging him from behind. The knife sliced through his jacket and bit deep enough to catch skin. Raylan spun, leveling the .45 with a look of no fear and stern resolve.

"Drop it." The youth lunged but not close enough to make Raylan move. "Drop it now and things don't get worse, son." The young man snarled in determination of one too belligerent to realize how much danger he was in.

Or perhaps he didn't recognize the threat of a handgun.

"Look kid, you drop the knife and I don't have to shoot you in the arm which is gonna hurt and make the rest of these good people get real edgy. Ain't nothin' here worth the pain you're courting." Never taking his eyes off the young man, Raylan called out to Jonathan. "They're okay, right? Nothing that a slap on the wrist can't set right?"

Raylan realized that he was, in fact, talking out his ass. He hadn't exactly had time to study the finer points of law in Draega. If that even existed.
